Insulation for Heat, Humidity and Storms
Spray foam insulation in Houma is mostly about keeping heat and wet air out of the house. NOAA normals for Houma show a July average high of 91.3F, summer maximums in the mid-90s, and 8 to 9 inches of rain in June and July. The air conditioner runs most of the year, and every leak in the ceiling, floor and ducts pulls hot, humid air inside. We seal those leaks and insulate the spaces that need it, using open-cell or closed-cell spray foam where it makes sense and blown-in insulation where that is the better value.
Louisiana code and climate zone 2
Louisiana uses the 2021 International Residential Code, and for energy purposes the whole state is climate zone 2; Terrebonne and Lafourche are listed in zone 2A. The Insulation Institute's summary lists R-38 ceilings and R-13 wood-frame walls for new homes, and R-0 for crawl space walls. For existing homes, the Department of Energy suggests more: R-49 to R-60 for an empty attic in zone 2, adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches, and R-13 for an uninsulated floor.
What storms changed
Hurricane Ida came ashore at Port Fourchon on August 29, 2021, as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds, the strongest on record to land in Lafourche Parish. Houma took the eyewall. Roofs, walls and attics were damaged across both parishes, and many homes have been repaired or rebuilt since. When walls and roofs are open, spray foam can be applied directly to the framing. When the roof was patched but the insulation stayed, it may still be damp or matted and should be checked.
Spray foam insulation contractors: what to ask
When you compare spray foam insulation companies or insulation contractors near you, ask each the same questions. Which areas get foam, and which get blown-in? Open cell or closed cell, and how thick? What R-value will each area reach? How do they handle moisture and termite inspection gaps? How long must the house be empty while foam cures? Written answers tell you more than a price per square foot over the phone.
Closed cell vs open cell
Closed-cell foam cures dense, slows vapor and resists water, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch by HomeGuide's numbers. It is the usual choice under raised floors, on metal buildings and wherever wetting is possible. Open-cell foam is soft, fills cavities completely and costs less, at about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch. It is common on roof decks for sealed attics and in interior walls. Many jobs use both.
Spray foam insulation cost
National guides put installed spray foam at about $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot (HomeGuide), and whole-house jobs at $8,000 to $20,000 (HomeGuide) or $10,000 to $30,000 (Fixr). Attic, raised floor, wall and metal-building work each have their own ranges on the service pages. If Entergy Louisiana is your utility, its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program lists attic insulation, air sealing and duct sealing as measures; check its current terms.

Where We Work
We work across Terrebonne Parish, from Houma and Bayou Cane to Schriever, and down the bayous through Bourg, Chauvin and Montegut. In Lafourche Parish, we cover Thibodaux and the towns along Bayou Lafourche: Raceland, Lockport, Larose, Cut Off, Galliano and Golden Meadow. The housing changes as you head south. Houma, Bayou Cane and Thibodaux have both older raised homes and newer subdivisions. Down the bayous, homes are raised higher, shops and boat sheds are common, and storm repairs are a bigger part of the work. Each town page covers what we know about the homes and conditions there.

Common Questions
How much does it cost to spray foam?
HomeGuide puts installed spray foam at $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot for open cell and $3.00 to $5.00 for closed cell. Single-area jobs often land between $1,500 and $5,000, and whole-house work runs $8,000 to $20,000 (HomeGuide) or $10,000 to $30,000 (Fixr). Your written estimate after the visit is the real number.
Which spray foam has the highest R-value?
Closed-cell foam, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch according to HomeGuide, compared with R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open cell.
Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?
Foam does not feed mold, but if a roof, window or plumbing leak wets the framing behind it, moisture can sit there. That is why we check for leaks first and use closed-cell foam where wetting is possible.
Is spray foam a good idea under a raised house?
Yes. Closed-cell foam on the underside of the subfloor seals out humid air and does not sag or soak up water the way batts do. We leave termite inspection gaps where needed.
What R-value does Louisiana require in an attic?
The Insulation Institute's summary of Louisiana's 2021 code lists R-38 for ceilings in new homes. The Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an empty attic in zone 2.
Closed cell vs open cell: which is right for my house?
Closed cell under floors, on metal buildings and where moisture is possible. Open cell on roof decks for sealed attics and in interior walls. The quote shows which goes where.
Should I replace insulation that got wet in a hurricane?
If it stayed wet or smells musty, yes. Wet insulation loses its value and can hold moisture against wood. We check it and quote removal if needed.
How do I choose an insulation company in Houma?
Get at least two written quotes listing material, thickness and R-value for each area. Ask how moisture, termites, ventilation and cure time are handled. Compare scope, not just totals.
