What Comes Up Through the Floor
Raised floor and crawl space insulation is a big part of the work in bayou country. Many houses in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes sit above the ground on piers or over a shallow crawl space, and some were raised after flooding. Under that floor is the same air that sits over the bayous: hot, humid and open to the wind. Old batts stapled between the joists tend to sag, soak up moisture and fall down, leaving the floor bare.
Closed-cell foam under the floor
Closed-cell foam sprayed against the underside of the subfloor bonds to the wood, fills gaps around pipes and wires, and blocks humid air from reaching the house. It does not absorb water the way batts do. The Department of Energy suggests R-13 for an uninsulated floor in zone 2, and closed-cell foam reaches that in a couple of inches. Louisiana's code summary lists R-0 for crawl space walls, which is why the floor itself is usually the insulated surface here.
Enclosed crawl spaces
Where a house has a closed crawl space with block walls, another option is to seal the crawl: close the vents, lay a heavy vapor barrier on the ground and insulate the walls. HomeGuide lists crawl space encapsulation at $3 to $10 per square foot. Whether that makes sense depends on drainage; a crawl that floods is a poor candidate.
Termites
The LSU AgCenter calls the Formosan subterranean termite the most destructive insect in Louisiana, found in about half of the parishes. Foam can hide termite tubes on piers and foundation walls. We leave inspection gaps at the top of walls and around piers where needed, and we suggest you check your termite contract before foam goes in, since some pest companies have rules about it.
After high water
If water reached the underside of your floor in a storm, the old insulation should come out. Wet batts hold moisture against the floor framing for months.

How Underfloor Jobs Go
1. Look underneath
We check clearance, standing water, termite signs, plumbing leaks and the old insulation.
2. Clear it out
Fallen or wet batts and debris are removed and bagged.
3. Spray the floor
Closed-cell foam goes on the underside of the subfloor to the quoted thickness.
4. Leave inspection room
Gaps are kept where termite inspections need to see the piers and walls.

Raised Floor & Crawl Space Insulation Questions
Should I insulate the floor or the crawl space walls?
For most open or vented crawl spaces and homes on piers here, the floor. Louisiana's code summary lists R-0 for crawl space walls. Sealing the crawl and insulating its walls can work where the space stays dry.
Will foam under my floor attract termites?
Foam does not attract termites, but it can hide their tubes. We keep inspection gaps where needed and suggest you talk to your termite company.
How much clearance do you need under the house?
It depends on the job, but tight spaces take longer and cost more. We check clearance on the visit.
My floor batts keep falling down. Why?
Humidity makes them heavy, and the supports give out. Foam bonds to the subfloor and does not sag.
