When the Old Insulation Has to Go

Insulation removal and replacement is more common in Terrebonne and Lafourche than in most places, because storms are part of life here. Hurricane Ida struck on August 29, 2021, and in Golden Meadow the National Weather Service measured a 10.1-foot storm surge. Roofs were torn open across both parishes. Insulation that got wet and stayed in place can hold moisture and odor for years.

Reasons to remove

  • Water damage. Wet attic or underfloor insulation loses most of its value and can hold moisture against wood.
  • Mold and odor. Musty smells often trace back to damp insulation.
  • Pests. Rodents and other animals nest in insulation and leave it contaminated.
  • Air sealing. Sometimes clearing an attic is the only way to seal it properly.
  • Sagging underfloor batts. Batts under raised floors that have fallen or soaked up humidity.

How we remove it

Loose fill is vacuumed through a hose into bags outside the house, so nothing is carried through your rooms. Batts are bagged by hand. HomeAdvisor lists removal at $1 to $2 per square foot, with a typical job at $600 to $1,200.

Suspect materials

Older homes sometimes have vermiculite or other materials that can contain asbestos. Those should be tested before anyone disturbs them, and asbestos removal is a job for a licensed abatement contractor. HomeAdvisor lists asbestos removal at $1,190 to $3,255.

Replacing it

With the old material out, we seal the attic or floor and install new insulation to a real target: at least the R-38 that Louisiana's code lists for ceilings, and closed-cell foam under raised floors. HomeAdvisor's average for removal plus replacement is about $1,852.

How Removal Goes

1. Inspect

We identify the material, check for moisture, mold signs and pests, and flag anything that needs testing.

2. Protect the house

Hoses run outside, hatches are sealed off, and work areas are covered.

3. Remove and haul

Material is vacuumed or bagged and taken away.

4. Seal and reinsulate

The clean space is air sealed and new insulation installed to the quoted target.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

Do I need to remove insulation that got wet in a storm?

If it stayed wet, yes. Wet insulation loses its value and can keep wood damp. If it dried quickly and is clean, it may be fine; we check.

How long does removal take?

A typical attic or underfloor removal is often a one-day job, with new insulation the same day or the next.

Is old insulation dangerous?

Fiberglass and cellulose are irritants but safe to remove with protection. Vermiculite can contain asbestos and should be tested first.
