Why Foam Fits a Hot, Wet Climate

Spray foam insulation is mixed at the spray gun from two liquids, expands as it lands and hardens into a layer bonded to wood, metal or concrete. Since it grows into every seam, it does two jobs at once: it slows heat and it stops air. In Houma, where July highs average 91.3F and summer months bring 8 to 9 inches of rain, the air it stops is the real enemy. Hot, wet outdoor air leaking into a house makes the air conditioner work twice: once to cool it and again to pull the water out.

Closed cell vs open cell

Closed-cell foam cures dense and rigid. HomeGuide lists it at R-5 to R-7 per inch, and at normal thickness it slows water vapor and does not soak up water. Under a raised floor, on a metal building or anywhere that sees occasional wetting, it is our first choice.

Open-cell foam is soft and expands much more, filling rafter bays and wall cavities completely at a lower price per square foot. HomeGuide lists it at R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch. It is the common choice for the underside of roof decks when an attic is sealed, and for interior walls. It lets vapor pass, so it stays away from places that can stay wet.

Sealed attics in south Louisiana

Many homes here have the air handler and ducts in the attic, which runs far hotter than the outdoor air on a summer afternoon. Spraying the roof deck instead of the attic floor brings that equipment inside the cooled space. It is not right for every house: the attic must be truly sealed, and combustion appliances and moisture control need a look. We walk through that before quoting a roof-deck job.

Can mold grow behind spray foam?

Mold needs moisture. Foam does not feed mold, but it will not dry out a leak either. If a roof, window or plumbing leak wets the framing, water can sit against the foam. That is why we check for leaks before we spray and why closed-cell foam goes where wetting is possible.

Code targets

Louisiana uses the 2021 International Residential Code, and the whole state is treated as climate zone 2. The Insulation Institute's summary lists R-38 ceilings and R-13 wood-frame walls for new homes. Foam reaches those targets in less depth than batts, which helps in shallow roof framing.

Raised floors

Closed-cell foam under homes on piers to stop humid air and heat coming up through the floor.

New walls and additions

Open stud bays sprayed before drywall to the R-13 wall value in Louisiana's code.

Rebuilt and repaired homes

Walls and roofs reopened after storm repairs sprayed while the framing is exposed.

Metal shops and buildings

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam worth it in Houma?

In the right places, yes: sealed roof decks with attic ducts, raised floors, metal buildings and new walls. For a plain attic floor with no ducts, sealing and blowing loose fill is usually the better value.

Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?

Foam itself does not feed mold, but if a leak wets the wood behind it, moisture can sit there. We fix or flag leaks first and use closed-cell foam where wetting is possible.

How long do we stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours away, longer if the product instructions say so. We ventilate the space and tell you when it is ready.

Which spray foam has the highest R-value?

Closed-cell, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch by HomeGuide's numbers, versus R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open cell.
