Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much does it cost to spray foam?

HomeGuide puts installed spray foam at $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot for open cell and $3.00 to $5.00 for closed cell. Single-area jobs often land between $1,500 and $5,000, and whole-house work runs $8,000 to $20,000 (HomeGuide) or $10,000 to $30,000 (Fixr). Your written estimate after the visit is the real number.

Which spray foam has the highest R-value?

Closed-cell foam, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch according to HomeGuide, compared with R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open cell.

Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?

Foam does not feed mold, but if a roof, window or plumbing leak wets the framing behind it, moisture can sit there. That is why we check for leaks first and use closed-cell foam where wetting is possible.

Is spray foam a good idea under a raised house?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on the underside of the subfloor seals out humid air and does not sag or soak up water the way batts do. We leave termite inspection gaps where needed.

What R-value does Louisiana require in an attic?

The Insulation Institute's summary of Louisiana's 2021 code lists R-38 for ceilings in new homes. The Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an empty attic in zone 2.

Closed cell vs open cell: which is right for my house?

Closed cell under floors, on metal buildings and where moisture is possible. Open cell on roof decks for sealed attics and in interior walls. The quote shows which goes where.

Should I replace insulation that got wet in a hurricane?

If it stayed wet or smells musty, yes. Wet insulation loses its value and can hold moisture against wood. We check it and quote removal if needed.

How do I choose an insulation company in Houma?

Get at least two written quotes listing material, thickness and R-value for each area. Ask how moisture, termites, ventilation and cure time are handled. Compare scope, not just totals.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam worth it in Houma?

In the right places, yes: sealed roof decks with attic ducts, raised floors, metal buildings and new walls. For a plain attic floor with no ducts, sealing and blowing loose fill is usually the better value.

Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?

Foam itself does not feed mold, but if a leak wets the wood behind it, moisture can sit there. We fix or flag leaks first and use closed-cell foam where wetting is possible.

How long do we stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours away, longer if the product instructions say so. We ventilate the space and tell you when it is ready.

Which spray foam has the highest R-value?

Closed-cell, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch by HomeGuide's numbers, versus R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open cell.

Raised Floor & Crawl Space Insulation Questions

Should I insulate the floor or the crawl space walls?

For most open or vented crawl spaces and homes on piers here, the floor. Louisiana's code summary lists R-0 for crawl space walls. Sealing the crawl and insulating its walls can work where the space stays dry.

Will foam under my floor attract termites?

Foam does not attract termites, but it can hide their tubes. We keep inspection gaps where needed and suggest you talk to your termite company.

How much clearance do you need under the house?

It depends on the job, but tight spaces take longer and cost more. We check clearance on the visit.

My floor batts keep falling down. Why?

Humidity makes them heavy, and the supports give out. Foam bonds to the subfloor and does not sag.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

How much attic insulation does a Houma house need?

Louisiana's code summary lists R-38 for new ceilings. The Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an empty attic in zone 2, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches already there.

Is a sealed, foamed attic better in this climate?

It can be when ducts and the air handler are in the attic. It is not automatic; the attic has to be truly sealed and moisture managed. We look at your setup before recommending it.

Does Entergy help pay for attic insulation?

Entergy Louisiana lists attic insulation, air sealing and duct sealing in its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. Its overview does not list amounts, so check current terms before work starts.

Should I add a radiant barrier too?

It can help in a hot attic, especially with ducts there. Sealing and adequate insulation come first; we can talk about a radiant barrier on the visit.

Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions

How do I stop my metal building from sweating?

Keep humid air from reaching the cold steel. Closed-cell foam on the underside of the roof and walls does that.

Will foam make my shop cooler in summer?

Yes, it cuts the heat coming through the roof panels. Ventilation or cooling still matter for a working shop.

Can you foam over existing fiberglass blanket insulation?

Usually the old facing has to come off or be firmly attached, because foam needs a sound surface. We check and quote removal if needed.

Wall Insulation Questions

Can spray foam be added to existing walls?

Standard spray foam needs open cavities. For finished walls, dense-pack cellulose through small holes is the usual approach.

What R-value do walls need in Louisiana?

The Insulation Institute's summary of Louisiana's 2021 code lists R-13 for wood-frame walls in climate zone 2.

We are repairing storm damage. Should we foam the walls?

If the walls are open, it is the best time. Foam seals as it insulates, and it costs much less than retrofitting later.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

Do I need to remove insulation that got wet in a storm?

If it stayed wet, yes. Wet insulation loses its value and can keep wood damp. If it dried quickly and is clean, it may be fine; we check.

How long does removal take?

A typical attic or underfloor removal is often a one-day job, with new insulation the same day or the next.

Is old insulation dangerous?

Fiberglass and cellulose are irritants but safe to remove with protection. Vermiculite can contain asbestos and should be tested first.
